Let’s Hang — How to Create a Gallery Wall

One question that I am frequently asked is, “How do I create a gallery wall?” I love the look of a gallery wall and it is the perfect way to show off any unique art collection or to display your treasured family moments. But finding the perfect layout for a gallery wall can seem like an overwhelming task. First, put that hammer and nails down and have a plan. There are a few elements to consider before hanging art on the wall with these easy steps, hanging your own gallery can be simple and a whole lot less stressful.

The hardest part of hanging a gallery wall is establishing where to hang pictures on the wall. Before nailing any holes, establish your gallery wall layout.

When deciding on your gallery wall layout, start by hanging the largest item at eye-level. You’ll want the artwork to hang 57″ (inches) from the ground at the center of the piece. However, the height at which you hang art will also depend on the height of your ceilings and your furniture. If you have soaring ceilings, opt for large-scale art that covers more of your wall. If you are hanging a gallery wall above a sofa or tall furniture piece, you’ll need to adjust the height accordingly…keep in mind someone sitting on the sofa and leaning back.

There are lots of suggestions out there for DIY cutout templates, but I found these awesome Gallery Perfect Hang Your Own Gallery Frame wood frame kits that have everything you need to create your own wall gallery — templates included! I love the ease of this project already. There are a few variations of the frame sizes and colors that will help you achieve your perfect look.
